Brachymetatarsia

What is Brachymetatarsia?

Understanding the condition

Brachymetatarsia is a congenital condition in which one of the metatarsal bones in the foot is abnormally short, causing the affected toe to appear raised or shortened compared to the others. This condition most commonly affects the fourth toe and can occur in one or both feet. While some cases are only cosmetic, others may cause pain, difficulty wearing shoes, or problems with walking.

When to suspect Brachymetatarsia?

Signs & Symptoms

Shortened toe length

Pain or discomfort

Difficulty wearing shoes or cosmetic concerns

How We Diagnose Brachymetatarsia

Diagnosis includes a detailed physical examination to assess toe length, alignment, and foot structure. X-rays are used to confirm the shortened metatarsal bone and evaluate the severity of the condition, helping guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

How is surgery performed?

Surgical correction may be recommended for patients with pain, functional limitations, or cosmetic concerns. Procedures may include: Bone lengthening (distraction osteogenesis): Gradually lengthening the short metatarsal using an external fixator device. One-stage bone graft lengthening: Using a bone graft to extend the metatarsal in a single procedure.
