Heel Spurs
What is a Heel Spur?
Understanding the condition
Heel spurs, also known as heel bone spurs or calcaneal spurs, are bony growths that develop on the underside of the heel bone (calcaneus). A bone spur on the heel commonly develops alongside plantar fasciitis, where chronic tension and heel inflammation within the plantar fascia place repeated stress on the heel bone, leading to calcium deposit buildup.
While some heel spurs cause no symptoms, others can result in persistent heel pain, pain under the heel, or morning heel pain, especially when standing, walking, or taking the first steps after rest. Early heel spur treatment and appropriate heel pain treatment can help relieve symptoms and restore comfortable movement.
When to suspect a Heel Spur?
Signs & Symptoms
Sharp heel pain when standing up in the morning
Pain that worsens after prolonged walking
Tenderness and inflammation under the heel
How We Diagnose Heel Spurs
Diagnosis begins with a clinical examination of the foot and heel, focusing on pain location and tenderness.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi may request X-rays to confirm the presence of a bony spur and assess the degree of inflammation or related plantar fasciitis.
A full assessment of foot mechanics helps guide an individualized treatment plan targeting both the spur and its underlying causes.
