Bunions

What is a Bunion?

Understanding the condition

A bunion (also known as hallux valgus) is a common foot deformity in which a bony prominence develops at the base of the big toe, causing the toe to drift inward toward the second toe and creating a crooked big toe. This misalignment places stress on the joint, leading to big toe pain, swelling, redness, and the development of a noticeable bump on the side of the foot, making it difficult to wear shoes comfortably.
Over time, bunions can worsen, resulting in big toe deformity, walking pain, and changes in gait or balance if left untreated. Early bunion treatment is important to relieve symptoms and slow the progression of the condition.

How We Diagnose Bunions

Diagnosis of bunions (hallux valgus) involves a comprehensive clinical examination and gait assessment to evaluate foot alignment, pressure distribution, and the extent of the foot deformity.

Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi, a bunion specialist, carefully examines the affected joint and may recommend X-rays to determine the severity of the big toe deformity and any joint damage. This comprehensive evaluation helps guide the most appropriate bunion treatment, including hallux valgus treatment, and determine whether bunion surgery may be recommended based on the patient’s condition.

How is surgery performed?

If pain persists or the deformity worsens despite conservative care, surgical correction may be recommended. Surgical options include: Osteotomy, cutting and realigning the first metatarsal bone for proper alignment Removal of excess bone tissue to reduce the bony prominence Realignment of tendons and ligaments around the joint for stability
