Charcot Foot

What is a Charcot Foot?

Understanding the condition

Charcot foot, also known as Charcot arthropathy foot, is a serious and potentially disabling complication of diabetic foot disease associated with diabetic neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy. It occurs when weakened bones in the foot fracture and shift because nerve damage reduces sensation.

Since many patients experience little or no pain, these injuries often go unnoticed, leading to progressive foot collapse, foot deformity, and loss of arch stability. If left untreated, diabetic Charcot foot can result in foot ulcers, severe instability, and an increased risk of amputation. Early Charcot foot treatment is essential for amputation prevention and preserving long-term foot function.

How We Diagnose Charcot Foot

Diagnosis involves a thorough physical examination and a review of medical history in diabetic patients presenting with unexplained foot swelling or deformity.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi uses X-rays, CT, or MRI imaging to detect early bone fractures, joint dislocation, and signs of inflammation.
Blood tests may also be ordered to rule out infection, ensuring an accurate diagnosis.
Early detection is key to preventing permanent damage and deformity.
