Adult Acquired Flatfoot
What is an Adult Acquired Flatfoot?
Understanding the condition
Adult acquired flatfoot, also known as adult flat feet, develops when the collapsed foot arch gradually loses its normal shape over time, leading to foot arch pain, swelling, ankle pain, and walking difficulty. The condition most often results from posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), in which the tendon that supports the arch becomes stretched or torn. As the arch weakens and fallen arches develop, the foot rolls inward (overpronation), causing foot rolling inward, abnormal gait, and progressive foot deformity if not properly treated. Early adult flatfoot treatment is essential to relieve symptoms and slow the progression of the condition.
When to suspect Adult Acquired Flatfoot?
Signs & Symptoms
Gradual flattening of the foot arch
Pain or swelling along the inside of the ankle
Foot turning outward or ankle leaning inward
How We Diagnose Adult Acquired Flatfoot
Diagnosis of adult acquired flatfoot begins with a detailed clinical examination to assess arch height, foot flexibility, and tendon strength. Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi, an adult flatfoot specialist and foot & ankle specialist, evaluates gait mechanics and may perform the “heel rise test” to assess posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) and overpronation.
X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI imaging help determine tendon integrity, joint alignment, the collapsed foot arch, and the extent of foot deformity. This comprehensive assessment enables an accurate diagnosis and guides a personalized adult flatfoot treatment plan aimed at restoring stability, improving function, and preventing further progression.
How is Adult Acquired Flatfoot treated?
How We Heal Adult Acquired Flatfoot
- Custom orthotics and supportive footwear to improve alignment and reduce strain
- Bracing to stabilize the arch and control motion in more advanced cases
- Physical therapy to strengthen the posterior tibial tendon and surrounding muscles
- Anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and swelling
- Lifestyle modifications, including weight management and activity adjustments
