Achilles Tendonitis / Rupture

What is Achilles Tendonitis / Rupture?

Understanding the condition

Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone (calcaneus). This tendon plays a vital role in walking, running, and jumping. When overused or strained, it can become swollen and painful.
If left untreated, the tendon may weaken and partially or completely rupture, resulting in sudden, sharp pain and loss of function in the lower leg.

When to suspect Achilles tendonitis?

Signs & Symptoms

Pain or stiffness along the back of the heel

Swelling or thickening of the tendon

Pain that worsens during activity

How We Diagnose Achilles Tendonitis

Diagnosis begins with a thorough clinical examination of the ankle and lower leg.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi evaluates for swelling, tenderness, and range of motion, and performs specialized tests (such as the Thompson test) to check tendon integrity.
Ultrasound or MRI imaging may be used to confirm inflammation, partial tears, or complete ruptures and to guide treatment planning.

How is surgery performed?

If a tendon rupture occurs or conservative treatment fails, surgical repair may be necessary. Procedures typically involve: Suturing the torn tendon ends back together Reinforcement with grafts in cases of severe damage or degeneration Minimally invasive techniques that reduce scarring and recovery time
