Gout

What is Gout?

Understanding the condition

Gout is a form of arthritis in the foot caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals within the joints. It most commonly affects the big toe joint (first metatarsophalangeal joint), resulting in big toe gout, but it may also involve the ankle, midfoot, or other joints, leading to gout in the foot. A gout attack often begins suddenly, causing severe big toe pain, a swollen big toe, redness, warmth, and an inflamed big toe joint. Without proper gout treatment, repeated gout flares can lead to permanent joint damage, tophi, deformity, and the need for ongoing gout in feet treatment.

How We Diagnose Gout

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi may perform a joint fluid analysis to confirm the presence of uric acid crystals and order blood tests to measure uric acid levels.
X-rays or ultrasound imaging may also be used to detect joint damage or urate deposits (tophi).
An accurate diagnosis ensures that treatment targets both pain relief and long-term prevention.
