Haglund's Deformity
What is Haglund’s Deformity?
Understanding the condition
Haglund’s deformity is a bony enlargement, sometimes described as a bone spur on the back of the heel, that forms where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone (calcaneus). This heel bone bump, also known as a pump bump, can irritate the surrounding soft tissues and lead to retrocalcaneal bursitis, causing back of heel pain, Achilles tendon pain, redness, and heel swelling. Symptoms are often made worse by stiff shoes or rigid heel counters, resulting in pain wearing shoes. Early Haglund treatment, including appropriate heel bump treatment or pump bump treatment, can help relieve symptoms and prevent the condition from progressing.
When to suspect Haglund’s Deformity?
Signs & Symptoms
Noticeable bump on the back of the heel
Pain or swelling near the Achilles tendon insertion
Redness or inflammation caused by shoe friction
How We Diagnose Haglund's Deformity
Diagnosis of Haglund’s deformity begins with a comprehensive clinical examination of the heel and Achilles tendon area. Dr. Malek Abu Al Nadi, a Haglund’s deformity specialist, evaluates the heel bone bump, foot structure, shoe wear patterns, tendon flexibility, and any back of heel pain or Achilles tendon pain.
X-rays are commonly used to confirm the presence of the bone spur on the back of the heel, assess retrocalcaneal bursitis, and evaluate any involvement of the Achilles tendon. This detailed assessment helps develop a personalized Haglund treatment plan and determine whether conservative care or Haglund’s deformity surgery is the most appropriate option.
How is Haglund’s Deformity treated?
How We Heal Haglund's Deformity
- Shoe modifications, opting for soft-backed or open-heeled footwear to minimize irritation
- Custom orthotics or heel lifts to reduce pressure on the back of the heel
- Ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications to decrease pain and swelling
- Physical therapy and stretching to improve Achilles flexibility and relieve tension
- Corticosteroid injections (in select cases) to reduce inflammation and discomfort
