Bunions

What is a Bunion?

Understanding the condition

A bunion (also known as hallux valgus) is a bony prominence that develops at the base of the big toe, causing the toe to drift inward toward the second toe.
This misalignment places stress on the joint, leading to pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty wearing shoes.
Over time, bunions can worsen and affect gait or balance, especially if left untreated or aggravated by tight footwear.

When to suspect a  Bunion?

Signs & Symptoms

How We Diagnose Bunions

Diagnosis involves a clinical examination and gait assessment to evaluate foot alignment and pressure distribution.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi carefully examines the affected joint and may recommend X-rays to determine the severity of the deformity and joint damage.
This comprehensive evaluation helps guide both non-surgical and surgical treatment options tailored to the patient’s needs.

How is surgery performed?

If pain persists or the deformity worsens despite conservative care, surgical correction may be recommended. Surgical options include: Osteotomy, cutting and realigning the first metatarsal bone for proper alignment Removal of excess bone tissue to reduce the bony prominence Realignment of tendons and ligaments around the joint for stability
