Adult Acquired Flatfoot
What is an Adult Acquired Flatfoot?
Understanding the condition
Adult acquired flatfoot develops when the arch of the foot collapses over time, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty walking.
The condition most often results from posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) — when the tendon that supports the arch becomes stretched or torn.
As the arch weakens, the foot rolls inward (overpronates), altering normal gait and causing progressive deformity if not properly treated.
When to suspect Adult Acquired Flatfoot?
Signs & Symptoms
Gradual flattening of the foot arch
Pain or swelling along the inside of the ankle
Foot turning outward or ankle leaning inward
How We Diagnose Adult Acquired Flatfoot
Diagnosis begins with a detailed clinical examination to assess arch height, foot flexibility, and tendon strength.Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi evaluates gait mechanics and may perform the “heel rise test” to check posterior tibial tendon function.
X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI imaging help determine tendon integrity, joint alignment, and the extent of deformity.
This comprehensive assessment guides a personalized treatment plan aimed at restoring stability and preventing progression.
How is Adult Acquired Flatfoot treated?
How We Heal Adult Acquired Flatfoot
- Custom orthotics and supportive footwear to improve alignment and reduce strain
- Bracing to stabilize the arch and control motion in more advanced cases
- Physical therapy to strengthen the posterior tibial tendon and surrounding muscles
- Anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and swelling
- Lifestyle modifications, including weight management and activity adjustments
