Gout

What is Gout?

Understanding the condition

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals within joints. It most commonly affects the big toe joint (first metatarsophalangeal joint) but may also involve the ankle, midfoot, or other joints.
A gout attack often begins suddenly, producing severe pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in the affected area. Without proper management, repeated attacks can lead to joint damage and deformity.

How We Diagnose Gout

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi may perform a joint fluid analysis to confirm the presence of uric acid crystals and order blood tests to measure uric acid levels.
X-rays or ultrasound imaging may also be used to detect joint damage or urate deposits (tophi).
An accurate diagnosis ensures that treatment targets both pain relief and long-term prevention.
