Haglund's Deformity
What is Haglund’s Deformity?
Understanding the condition
Haglund’s deformity is a bony enlargement that forms on the back of the heel, where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone (calcaneus).
This prominence can irritate the surrounding soft tissues and bursa, leading to pain, redness, and swelling at the back of the heel.
The condition is often aggravated by stiff shoes or rigid heel counters, which rub against the bone — commonly referred to as “pump bump.”
When to suspect Haglund’s Deformity?
Signs & Symptoms
Noticeable bump on the back of the heel
Pain or swelling near the Achilles tendon insertion
Redness or inflammation caused by shoe friction
How We Diagnose Haglund's Deformity
Diagnosis begins with a clinical examination of the heel and Achilles tendon area.
Dr. Malek Abu-Al-Nadi evaluates foot structure, shoe wear patterns, and tendon flexibility.
X-rays are often used to confirm the size and shape of the bony prominence and assess any associated inflammation or Achilles involvement.
This comprehensive assessment allows for a personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s anatomy and symptoms.
How is Haglund’s Deformity treated?
How We Heal Haglund's Deformity
- Shoe modifications, opting for soft-backed or open-heeled footwear to minimize irritation
- Custom orthotics or heel lifts to reduce pressure on the back of the heel
- Ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications to decrease pain and swelling
- Physical therapy and stretching to improve Achilles flexibility and relieve tension
- Corticosteroid injections (in select cases) to reduce inflammation and discomfort
